Digital nomad health insurance: questions to ask before buying

Compare healthcare and travel cover by territory, duration, exclusions and claims procedures, and check separately whether it satisfies your residence route.

Quick answer

Choose cover by what it will pay for during your actual stay, not by whether the product name contains “nomad”. Travel disruption, medical treatment and medical evacuation are different kinds of protection. Check your everyday healthcare needs and any immigration insurance requirement separately.

Write down the stay you need covered

List the countries, intended dates and any returns home. Include the activities you expect to do and any ongoing care or medication you need to discuss. Ask the insurer how these facts affect cover; do not assume an online quote has assessed them.

Compare the same questions across policies

  • Does cover apply throughout the stay and in each destination?
  • What exclusions, waiting periods, deductibles or limits apply?
  • How are pre-existing conditions and routine care handled?
  • Are evacuation and repatriation included, and who authorizes them?
  • Must you pay first, or can the provider arrange direct payment?

Check the residence requirement separately

If your chosen route requires a particular coverage amount, insurer, territory or period, obtain the current instructions from the accepting authority. Ask the insurer for evidence that addresses those requirements. A visa-oriented certificate is not a substitute for reading the full policy, and a useful travel policy is not automatically accepted for residence.

Prepare to use the cover

Keep the assistance number, policy identifier and claim instructions available offline. Find out how to get help before a non-urgent appointment and which records a claim needs. CDC’s insurance guidance explains the distinction between the main coverage types; it does not endorse a particular provider. TheKingMap helps track this preparation and does not sell, compare or approve insurance policies.
